What Are Lodge Officers and their duties?

Elected Officers

  • Selection Process: Chosen by the voting members of the lodge through an election.
  • Term: Typically serves for one year, although this may vary.
  • Role: These officers bear significant responsibility for the governance, leadership, and operation of the lodge.
  • Primary Officers:
    1. Worshipful Master (WM)
    2. Senior Warden (SW)
    3. Junior Warden (JW)
    4. Treasurer
    5. Secretary


Responsibilities of Elected Officers:

  • Governance: Ensure the lodge complies with Masonic law, rituals, and regulations.
  • Decision-Making: Lead discussions on important lodge matters, including finances and membership.
  • Accountability: Responsible for the strategic direction and long-term goals of the lodge.

 

Worshipful Master (WM)

  • Duties: Presides over meetings, ensures adherence to Masonic law and ritual, and provides leadership.
  • Jewel: Square
    • Meaning: Symbol of morality, fairness, and uprightness in actions and decisions.


Senior Warden (SW)

  • Duties: Assists the Worshipful Master, oversees lodge operations, and prepares to assume the Master's role.
  • Jewel: Level
    • Meaning: Symbolizes equality, integrity, and the level platform on which Masons meet.


Junior Warden (JW)

  • Duties: Supervises refreshment, maintains order during recess, and oversees the conduct of members.
  • Jewel: Plumb
    • Meaning: Represents upright behavior and moral rectitude in life and actions.


Treasurer

  • Duties: Manages lodge finances, collects dues, and provides financial reports.
  • Jewel: Crossed Keys
    • Meaning: Denotes responsibility, trust, and the security of the lodge's financial resources.


Secretary

  • Duties: Records minutes, maintains membership records, and handles correspondence.
  • Jewel: Crossed Quills
    • Meaning: Symbolizes communication, record-keeping, and the importance of written documentation.

Appointed Officers

  • Selection Process: Appointed by the Worshipful Master, often in consultation with senior officers or based on merit and service.
  • Term: Typically serves for one year, concurrent with the elected officers.
  • Role: Support the elected officers by handling specific tasks, ceremonial duties, and operational assistance.

    2. Junior Deacon (JD)

    4. Master Of Ceremony

Responsibilities of Appointed Officers:

  • Support: Assist in ceremonies, candidate preparation, and maintaining order within the lodge.
  • Operations: Handle specific duties such as guarding the lodge, organizing ceremonies, and ensuring a harmonious lodge environment.
  • Symbolic Representation: Perform symbolic and ritualistic roles during meetings and degree work.


Senior Deacon (SD)

  • Duties: Acts as a messenger for the Worshipful Master, conducts candidates, and maintains communication within the lodge.
  • Jewel: Square and Compass with a Sun
    • Meaning: Represents guidance, light, and enlightenment provided to candidates and brethren.


Junior Deacon (JD)

  • Duties: Assists the Senior Deacon and monitors the inner door.
  • Jewel: Square and Compass with a Moon
    • Meaning: Symbolizes watchfulness and harmony within the lodge.


Chaplain

  • Duties: Provides spiritual guidance and leads prayers during meetings and ceremonies.
  • Jewel: Open Book
    • Meaning: Represents sacred teachings and the moral guidance derived from faith.


Master Of Ceremonies

  • Duties: Assist with refreshments, prepare candidates, and support lodge operations.
  • Jewel: Cornucopia
    • Meaning: Symbolizes abundance, hospitality, and nourishment.


Tiler

  • Duties: Guards the lodge's outer door and ensures only qualified members enter.
  • Jewel: Sword
    • Meaning: Represents vigilance and protection of the lodge.
